We make those definitions for ourselves, and that is why women's rights and LGBT rights share so many commonalities and thus, should share in our battles. Creating change with art http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=40326 Making the film "Milk" or looking at art at the DIA is not enough. Nor is simply discussing nebulous terms like "diversity," "inclusion" and "hate." We need both pieces to really create a lasting message. Parental rights mean better lives for kids http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=40225 Since the rights of same-sex couples depend on what state they live in, their rights as parents differ as well. In Michigan, this means that any biological parent, regardless of how much their partner was part of their children's lives, can pretty much decide on a whim to allow or prohibit visitation rights. Merger: Celebrate cautiously http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=40120 There will be plenty of both cheers and caution at this week's announcement that the Triangle Foundation and Michigan Equality have merged. Cheers for obvious reasons: We're all ecstatic that this day has finally come. But we're cautiously optimistic about lofty goals, tenuous statements and ubiquious use of the word "hope," especially without a hard, strategic workplan available for review. Crabs in a basket http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=40026 Our community has a tendency to play the game of "Whose issue is the most important?" Is it HIVAIDS or LGBT youth? Are we more concerned with second-parent adoption rights or workplace discrimination? Transgender equality or marriage equality? How to inspire belief http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=39895 Sometimes, these kids are just kids. But they're also passionate about LGBT causes, and many of them are already active in their communities in important ways. And what's more, they're dealing with some very adult issues that make many of them way older than their years: Acceptance. Discrimination. HIV. Pregnancy. Homelessness. Abuse. Bullying. They're trying to find a place where they cannot only just be kids, but be 100-percent themselves. Why Paul Scott matters http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=39752 Paul Scott is, no doubt, a right wing-driven, narrow minded, uninformed man who is obviously out of touch with the real needs of our state and its citizens - no matter their gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation. He is backed by conservative nut jobs like Gary Glenn, and he very clearly has his priorities out of whack. Life, Sweetness, Hate? http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=39649 This comic advocating violence against gays says more about the atmosphere for LGBT students at Notre Dame than a statement from the president on the importance of diversity ever could. That is why apologizing and resigning and stating one's support does little to mend this situation. Celebrating (HIV) positive lives http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=39548 They are two vastly different people. One is a gay male dancer, the other a straight, married mother and motivational speaker; one is college educated and classically trained, the other an escapee from a life on the streets. But both have taken a diagnosis that could very well have meant death and turned it into a celebration of life.
