Wellspring to kick off 25th season with 'Fall Concert of Dance'
KALAMAZOO - Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers is set to kick off its 25th performance season with their annual "Fall Concert of Dance."
"The Fall Concert of Dance" will run Nov. 11 - 14, with 8 p.m. performance times on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday. The performances will take place in the Wellspring Theater at the Epic Center.
This year's program will be a unique endeavor featuring the re-setting of Erick Hawkins "Classic Kitetails." Cori Terry, Wellspring's artistic director, performed in "Classic Kitetails" at Carnegie Hall in 1975 as a member of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company in New York City. Hawkins was a modern dance pioneer who died in 1994.
Terry taught the Wellspring dancers "Classic Kitetails" from memory, an old video and some hand-written notes and diagrams left by Hawkins. The piece will include all of the Wellspring dancers and a special appearance by Joseph Mills, who worked with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company from 1990-1994. Mills will perform Hawkins' original role in "Classic Kitetails."
"Classic Kitetails" is danced to the lush music of David Diamond, which will be performed live by a Western Michigan University Quintet and Conductor Bruce Uchimura.
Wellspring will also perform "Doubts about Waiting", which was last performed in 2000. It is choreographed by Brian Jeffery of XSIGHT Performance Group in Chicago. This will be danced by Michael Miller and Rachel Miller.
Also included in the evening will be "What Went Wrong," a quartet that explores the state of the world today, and "Family Altar", which will include the entire Wellspring Company and guest artist Tyler Cloud.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $10 for students and free for children 5 and under. Tickets are on sale now at the Miller Auditorium Box Office, the Epic Center Box Office and by calling 269-387-2300 or by logging onto www.wmich.edu/miller.
