Ferndale Dems endorse Ferndale's Proposal B

FERNDALE - The Ferndale Democratic Party voted unanimously to endorse Proposal B, which would initiate Instant Runoff Voting in Ferndale elections. If passed the amendment would change the city charter to provide for election of the mayor and city council through the use of an Instant Runoff Voting system, pending the availability and purchase of compatible software and approval of the equipment by the Ferndale Election Commission.

Instant Runoff Voting, or IRV, allows voters to rank candidates for a given position, rather than simply choosing one. If the voter's first choice does not win, then their vote goes automatically to the candidate listed as second choice. This system ensures that the winning candidate is actually supported by a clear majority of voters.

Ferndale Mayor Pro Tem Craig Covey, the Triangle Foundation and the Green Party of Michigan are among the leaders and other organizations that have endorsed Proposal B.
