Award-Winning Documentary Considers Mormon Trans Woman's Tale Of Transition

A new documentary from OHO Media titled "Transmormon" highlights a young trans woman's self-realization while intimately introducing viewers to her family, her faith and her journey.

The film follows 25-year-old Eri Hayward through the final days leading up to her sexual reassignment surgery.

"I think maybe being so unhappy in my body for the longest time helped me really separate what are physical things and what are my spiritual components," she says. "I don't think that I succumbed to my body. I think I succumbed to my spirit and what it needed. It was like letting go and letting the picture the come into focus by itself without my trying to force it to be something it's not."

"Transmormon" also explores how her parent have resolved their Mormon faith and the reality of their daughter's transition.

"We believe that the church leaders are receiving revelation that helps them to be able to better serve in the callings that we're given in the priesthood. We have the 'Proclamation to the World' on the Family, which states very clearly that marriage is between a man and a woman. In my opinion, Eri is a woman and so I don't see a problem with that. I'm hoping the leaders of the church are going to see it that way."

"I'm hoping that this documentary that you're shooting will be watched by some parents," Ed, her father, says in the conclusion of the film. "Maybe something we've said will help them -- and through helping them, help their children."

"Transmormon" is the winner of an Artistic Vision Award at the 2014 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and the 2014 Utah Short Film of the Year Award. A Mormon Mental Health Podcast just recently checked in with Eri, her parents and her boyfriend. Check out the film, then listen to the podcast here.
