Oregon AG Will Not Defend Ban On Same Sex Marriage

Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum announced Feb. 20 that she will not defend the state's ban of marriage between dedicated same-sex couples.

The ban "cannot withstand a federal constitutional challenge under any standard of review," Rosenblum stated in a court filing.

Two same-sex couples filed suit against the ban in October 2013. Shortly after the suit was filed, Rosenblum signed onto a brief in support of couples fighting for marriage equality, stating that she believed that banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

Rosenblum's announcement joins Oregon with Virginia, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Nevada, all states with Attorneys General who also have refused to defend their state's bans.
