Propaganda and Rights

S/he Said

"Some of these radical gay groups are willing to do anything in the world to have their way of doing sex legitimized by this country. They'll tear down any institution in order to have their way."

- Pat Robertson, responding to the Obama administration's announcement that it would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act, on The 700 Club, http://www.towleroad.com, Feb. 24.

"In far too many instances, the press goes after these words as if they were gold - and in a way, they are, if you want to sensationalize your news and get as much traffic as possible to your site. We live in an era in which news sources of all kinds are competing for views. And we also live in an era in which the general public is obsessed with trans people. They can't get enough of us - on reality shows, talk shows, and in sensationalized news headlines. Because the culture seems so completely enamored of us, at least news-wise, we (and particularly trans women) tend to show up in headlines when being trans has absolutely nothing to do with the story. The trans part is just there to get readers, viewers, or clicks."

- Matt Kailey, in his blog titled "Rep. Chris Lee: When Trans in a Headline Matters," http://www.tranifesto.com, Mar. 03.

"We've seen a tremendous amount of progress in the last week and the last couple of years in LGBT rights gains, but we're also facing a political climate where change will be more difficult. Bottom line, if we want to continue to advance equality and to resist opponents' efforts to pull back those advances, we really do need to give to LGBT organizations."

- Ineke Mushovic, executive director Movement Advancement Project, about its new study on the financial health of the nation's LGBT organizations, advocate.com, Mar. 02. MPA is an independent think tank that provides research for LGBT equality.

"President Barack Obama's decision to no longer defend marriage and federal law is a threat to the common good and must be opposed. He is relentlessly dismantling the moral order and fiber of America. Every civilization until now has understood marriage as the union of one man and one woman for the purpose of procreation and education of children. Traditional marriage is the foundation of the family."

- Jeremy Strondt, in a letter to the editor of the Detroit Free Press, about the Obama administration's announcement that it would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act, http://www.freep.com, March 04.
