Detroit Derby Girls discuss part in Drew Barrymore film, 'Whip It!'

Before the official nationwide release of Drew Barrymore's directorial debut "Whip It!" on Oct. 2, several of the Detroit Derby Girls, who star in the film shot last summer in Michigan, discuss the rivalries, the spills and the thrills of life on the rink. This event, Detroit Derby Girls Rock!, is for adults and teens in at least sixth grade and will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Downtown Library from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 1. The girls will also discuss their part in making this groundbreaking film.

The Detroit Derby Girls, established in early 2005, is an all-female owned and operated flat-track roller derby league. Over 60 skaters strong, the Detroit Derby Girls are part of the national rebirth of roller derby that began in 2001.

The average derby girl skater devotes a minimum of 12-15 hours a week to the league, including practices, meetings and events.

Find out more at this unique event - and get a solid background in Derby Girl life before you see the film. The Downtown Library is located at 343 S. Fifth Avenue in Ann Arbor. For more information, call the library at 734-327-8301.
