Two LGBT flicks to be among nearly 30 independent movies

FERNDALE -

Two of the nearly 30 independent films at the first Ferndale Film Festival, over Labor Day Weekend Sept. 3-7, feature LGBT themes. Both of them, "Mr. Right" and "Family," will screen at Affirmations on Sept. 5.

"Family" is a coming-of-age feature centering on the lives of a lesbian clique who all experience continual strife in their personal and professional lives as a result of being closeted. Some of the women must deny and reject the ladies they love, while others struggle with the suffocating confines of being closeted for the sake of their careers. When the strain becomes too great, the women forge a pact to come out together within 30 days in every significant relationship and situation in their life. "Family" screens at 5 p.m.

The dramedy "Mr. Right" asks, "What do a TV producer, a rugby player, two actors, a model and an artist have in common?" The brother/sister team of writer David Morris and director Jacqui Morris collaborated to tell the story of boys hooking up, breaking up and making up as they search to find true happiness. "Mr. Right" won the Audience Choice Award at the Waterfront Film Festival in Saugatuck in June. "Mr. Right" plays at 7 p.m.

Festival director Dean Bach, owner of the popular Woodward Avenue lounge and eatery Dino's, states that the happenings during the Ferndale Festival promise to be "like nothing you've ever seen." The five-day festival kicks off at Dino's at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 with screenings from the Festival's 300-second Micro-Mini Film Competition and a networking event.

A cornucopia of cutting edge feature films, documentaries, shorts and the micro-mini 300-second films produced by local filmmakers are on the docket to be screened at a variety of Ferndale pubs, eateries and businesses, including Dino's Lounge, Como's, Go Comedy, Blumz, Affirmations, Rosie O'Grady's and more.

Free big-screen drive-ins will take place at dusk at two Ferndale locations on Sept. 5. The cult feature "Army of Darkness" will be shown at dusk at the parking lot located off of E. Nine Mile Road near Ferndale's City Hall.

The Ferndale Film Festival is supported by over a dozen local and national businesses and organizations. Huntington Bank has taken the leading role as "Presenting Sponsor" with additional support from Bud Light, Bud Light Lime, Fox 2 News and Hour Detroit.

Tickets to film screenings are $5 each and weekend passes are $20 and admit filmgoers to all events. Tickets and passes are available in advance at the Huntington Bank location in downtown Ferndale at 306 W. Nine Mile Road.
