A2CT announces its 2009-10 mainstage season

'The Producers, 'Laramie Project' to be staged through next year

Ann Arbor Civic Theatre will stage three musicals and three non-musicals, plus two Junior Theatre productions and three Studio Series shows, during its 2009-10 season.

"We wanted to create a season that had some comedy and escapism, but also some important, relevant drama," said play selection committee chair Mark Batell in a press release. "That's why our diverse season includes the zaniness of Steve Martin as well as the haunting and timely drama 'The Laramie Project.' We believe we have crafted a season that will appeal to a wide range of theatergoers, as well as to moviegoers.

All of our plays have some connection to the cinema -either they've been films, they will be films, or were written by a screenwriter, as in Steve Martin's 'Lapin Agile.' We've priced our tickets this season to keep in step with the recession, so seeing an A2CT show will be in line with seeing a movie, with the added bonus of the immediacy and intimacy of live theater." A2CT begins its season with the Broadway smash-hit, "The Producers," directed by Wendy Sielaff, Sept. 10-13, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. Next up: Martin's outrageous comedy, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," directed by Thom Johnson, from Nov. 19 to 22 at the Mendelssohn.

A2CT rings in the New Year Jan. 14-17 with the musical "Nine" (soon to be a movie starring Daniel Day Lewis), directed by Edmond Reynolds. Civic does some sleuthing March 11-14 with the classic whodunit "The Hound of the Baskervilles," directed by David Andrews, at UM's Arthur Miller Theatre. The searing drama "The Laramie Project," directed by Keith Paul Medelis, runs May 6-9 at the Arthur Miller Theatre. Civic rounds out its season June 10-13 at the Mendelsssohn with the toe-tapping musical comedy "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," directed by Andy Ballnik.

Season tickets for the 09-10 season are on sale now and will be available through the A2CT office, 322 W. Ann St. For more information, call 734-971-2228, or visit http://www.a2ct.org.
